100% waterproof, is actually polythene over a polyester 3mm square grid (think of noughts & crosses)
to provide strength, about 60 microns (7 thou”) thick and therefore pretty lightweight.
Not quite like polythene bags or clear polythene sheet, although chemically pretty much the same.
We use it for special 100% waterproof patches on car and motorbike covers (see
car water proof patches and
motorcycle waterproof patches);
and this is another of the material choices for our
dinghy covers.
Also used for made to order jobs requiring 100% waterproof and lightweight; a recent example is
jet engine covers (off the plane !), although we don’t expect you to have a spare one of those in the back garden!
Use it for anything where you want total 100% waterproof, and you do not need heavyweight. The boss used
it to waterproof the roof of his garden shed, much better than felt (he says!).

Denier (or D) can be roughly defined as the diameter (thickness) of the thread used to weave the textile,
and this approximation is acceptable for everyday use. However this is not strictly correct in the technical sense.

A textile can be defined as a fabric or cloth created by either weaving or knitting (also crocheting & felting)
with a thread, fibre or yarn.
Breathability is about water vapour evaporation, not breathing ! For a technical definition go to the BSI (British
Standards Institute) website; our textiles comply with
BS3424 (water vapour permeability).
We also use two plastic materials, for which thickness is defined in
microns. A micron
is 1/1000th of a millimetre; for comparison, a human hair is about 100 microns. For true English we also
show the approximate 1/1000th of an inch equivalent !
These plastics are 100% waterproof (ie completely impervious to water) and therefore not breathable.
